Fermi Level and Fermi energy

  • The energy of the highest occupied level at absolute zero temperature is called Fermi-energy.

  • The corresponding level is called Fermi level.

  • The energy levels are absolute zero above Fermi level are completely empty, while those below are completely filled.

Fermi-Dirac Distribution function.

$f(E) = \frac{1}{1 + e^{[(E - E_F)/kT]}}$

Where,

f(E) = Probability that energy level ā€˜Eā€™ is occupied by an electron

$E_F$ = Fermi energy

k = Boltzmann constant

T = Absolute Temperature
