Lubrication:

Process of applying a substance to moving parts of machine which reduces friction between the surfaces and thereby minimizes their wear and tear.

Functions of lubricants:

• It reduces frictional resistance.
• It reduces loss of energy in the form of heat by acting as a coolant.
• It may absorb shacks between bearing and other engine parts.
• It acts as a good seal by preventing entry of dirt.
• It reduces maintenance and operating cost of the machine.
