These are obtained by condensation polymerization using phenol or its derivatives. Other name of this polymer is Bakelite.
Bakelite is a thermosetting resin prepared from condensing phenol with formaldehyde in presence of acidic/alkaline catalyst.
The reaction takes place in three steps
1) Preparation of O, O, P-tri methyl phenol resin
2) Polymerization of O-methylol phenol to give Novolac with linear structure
3) Heating Novolac to form highly ross- linked polymer Bakelite
Properties and uses:
Scratch proof and water resistant.
It is not attacked by non- oxidizing acid and salts.
Insoluble in many solvents.
Excellent insulating properties against electric current/ voltage.
It is used in electric insulator part e.g. Switches, plugs, switch and component mounting boards, printed circuit boards, heater handles. In paints and varnishes.
