  • Valve is a device that regulates, directs and control the flow of fluid. Every valve has its own characteristic. The valves are differentiated into two basic forms Inherent Valve characteristic and Installed value characteristics.

  • Inherent valve characteristics are of three types :-
  • Linear
  • Equal %
  • Quick Opening

Linear Valve Equal % Valve
The Linear characteristic of control value acts such that the movement of the stem of a valise is proportional. The flow capacity increases linearly with valve travel. The Equal % characteristic of control valve acts such that the movement of the stem of a value is exponential. The flow capacity increases exponentialy with valve stem travel.
The ${C_v}$ discharge capacity of linear characteristic valve is very proportional. The ${C_v}$ discharge capacity of equal % valve is exponential that is for small opening of trim the initial condition of the valve is less output but later as the trim travel increases the flow of suddenly increases.
Examples of valves having linear characteristics are Gate valve, Diaphragm valve. Examples of valves having equal % characteristics are Ball valve, Pinch valve, Globe valve.
Applications of Linear characteristics are pharma companies. Applications of Equal % characteristics are Dams used for water flow, oil manufacturing companies.
