The components of general diesel fuel injection system are as follows:
- Fuel Tank
It is usually positioned along the side of vehicle chassis and is the compartment which provides for clean and safe fuel storage.
- Filter units
These perform the function of removal of water and dirt from diesel. The primary filter is coarse wire gauze which prevents large solid particles from going to fuel feed pump. The secondary filter is after this pump and removes finer particles of dust and grit from diesel going to the injection pump.
- Fuel Feed Pump
It delivers the fuel from the tank to the fuel injection pump. The rate of fuel delivery depends on engine requirements.
- Fuel Injection Pump
The correct amount of fuel is metered, atomized and injected under high pressure to each cylinder in correct sequence at the precise time by means of this pump.
- Fuel Injectors
These in conjunction with the injection pump provide fuel to each cylinder.
- Connecting pipes
These are extra strong steel pipes whose function is to transmit the metered and pressurized fuel properly from the injection pump to each injector.
- Governor
The function of governor is to limit the maximum speed and control the engine speed by regulating the fuel supply under all conditions.
