General principles of KPIs are as follows:
- KPIs
are agreed to beforehand and reflect the CSFs on the project.
- KPIs indicate how much progress has been made toward the achievement of the
project’s targets, goals, and objectives.
- KPIs are not performance targets.
- The ultimate purpose of a KPI is the measurement of items directly relevant to
performance and to provide information on controllable factors appropriate for
decision making such that it will lead to positive outcomes.
- Good KPIs drive change but do not prescribe a course of action. They indicate how
close you are to a target but do not tell you what must be done to correct deviations
from the target.
- KPIs assist in the establishment of objectives to be targeted with the ultimate pur-
pose of either adding value to the project or achieving the prescribed value.
