Project managers are responsible for the ultimate success or failure of a project, and are essential member of any project team. Project manager is a professional in the field of project management.
Project managers have the responsibility of the planning, procurement and execution of a project, in any undertaking that has a defined scope, defined start and a defined finish; regardless of industry. Project managers are first point of contact for any issues or discrepancies arising from within the heads of various departments in an organization before the problem escalates to higher authorities, as project representative.
Project managers lead project teams, create budgets and timelines. They define project success criteria and ensure that each project is progressing successfully. People in these positions also regularly evaluate the performance of their team members to ensure the right talent is working on the project.
Although the Project Managers rarely take part in the direct actions that produce the project's objectives, they occupy an oversight position of managing the human and material resources of a project. This helps in building a healthy communication and trust among the team members and strives to ensure good practices for the success of the project.
Responsibilities of a project manager include:
- defining and communicating project objectives that are clear, useful and attainable.
- procuring the project requirements like workforce, required information, various agreements and material or technology needed to accomplish project objectives.
- managing the constraints of the project management triangle, which are cost, time, scope and quality.
There are different types of project manager, they are as follows:
1) Technical Project Managers: Technical project managers focus on deliverables and monitoring key performance indicators. They have a strong detail-oriented nature and approach concerns with a strong problem-solving mentality. They offer critical thinking skills that deep dive into decision-making processes. They offer strong knowledge bases with a hard description of what is necessary and what is not.
2) Architectural project manager: Architectural project managers lead architectural projects from budgeting to implementation. They have many of the same skills as their counterpart in the construction industry. An architectural project manager is also responsible for procuring construction bids, recruiting and selecting contractors and negotiating construction contracts.
3) Systems project manager: Systems project manager organizes all aspects of high-value networking projects. They also perform a hands-on role in planning, designing, and executing projects. System project manager are required to have experience working with computer operating systems and familiarity with large-scale business operating systems.
4) Engineering project manager: Engineering project manager duties involves direct coordinate the development of new products, designs, processes or offerings. Their responsibilities also include leading the research and development stage of projects and creating detailed project plans. They also work to propose budgets, staffing and equipment needs for the project.
