A decision is an act of selection or choice of one action from several alternatives. Decision making in project management is the process where the project leader and project team decide upon project strategy, tactics, and acceptable actions. For Project Stakeholders, the decisions normally concern project boundaries. For Project Core Team members, the decisions normally concern project plans and execution.

In decision-making process proper management is very important. Project manager are responsible for making decisions and ascertaining that the decisions made are carried out in accordance with defined objectives or goals.

Decision making in project management is reliant on the availability of information from multiple resources. But there is the possibility of the process becoming slow and increasingly frustrating if this information onslaught is combined with making conventional types of business decisions. Hence proper decision should be made.

Best project often have to live with the legacies of any decision that they take impacting the projects and by extension the organization in the long-term. Hence, if the decision has been taken bypassing best practices, procedures, and acceptable models, then after-effects can ruin the entire project.

Proper decision-making approach leads the project leader to deliver a perfect and well completed projects.

Some of the guidelines for an effective decision making in project management are as follows:

  • Identify the Issue First: Once Project manager comes to know that problem exists, then the next steps should be to define proper goals, collect the necessary data and information that will help in a rational decision-making process.
  • Consider All Solution Scenarios: Project managers should get team together to brainstorm on all solution scenarios. It is best not to filter any possibilities that may be remotely reasonable at this stage.

  • The Criteria Generate Should Be Objective: Project managers should ensure that the possible solutions are feasible and reasonable according to the measurement criteria of success or failure of the decision.

  • Choose and Implement the Best Solution: Project manager should make use of every filtration process, they should be able to decide on the best solution for the impending problem and quickly put that into action.

  • Keep Monitoring the Results: Project managers will only know if the decision made failed or succeeded if they keep monitoring and tracking the outcome of the solution. This can either be short-term or long-term, depending on the severity of the problem.

For a perfect decision making in project management some steps are given below:

  • Project manager should focus on goals that should be achieved during and at the end of a project.

  • Project manager should make data-driven decisions based on the available information.

  • Project manager should keep all organizational and resource crunch constraints into account when planning implementation.

  • Project Management should manage unforeseen risks and coming up with better solutions, so they do not repeat in similar projects in future.

  • Higher authorities in project management should set up a realistic project implementation process that is easily understood and adhered to by teams across different departments.
