FUNCTION

It is used to transmit engine torque to the driving wheel to drive the vehicle on road.

Requirement

• Engage and disengage engine from driving wheel when needed.

• Enable the driving wheel to rotate at different speed.

• Connect the driving wheels to engine smoothly without shock.

• Enables diversion of power flow at right angles.

• Transfer power from engine to wheel.

• Provide varied leverage b/w the engine and the drive wheel.

TYPES

• Automatic Transmission (AT)

• Automated Manual Transmission (AMT)

• Manual Transmission (MT)

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

1. Engine

Converts chemical energy into mechanical energy with losses i.e. friction, heat.

2. Clutch

Clutch is used to engage and disengage the engine power with rest of the transmission system.

4. Universal Joint

Universal joints are used to allow torque (rotational power) to be transmitted through a varying angle. where the torque from the engine is fed to the rear axle.

5. Propeller Shaft

Propeller shaft connects the drive from gear box to final drive. It is also called drive shaft. Transmit power from gear box to differential. It propels the vehicle forward, So called propeller shaft.

6. Differential

The differential is a device that splits the engine torque two ways, allowing each output to spin at a different speed. When turning, the inner and outer wheel have arcs of different turning radius.
