  • The umbrella cell concept in cellular system is the system, where the same radio system is used for microcells and overlaying macro-cells.In a small coverage area, a terminal crossing very small cells called micro cells which produces increased number of handoffs among other small neighboring cells. Umbrella cell approach is introduced to solve this type of handoff problem.
  • The power level inside the umbrella cell is increased as compared the power level in microcells which are used to form umbrella. It is difficult for cellular device providers to obtain new physical cell site locations in urban areas.
  • In any existing cell, technical and other non-technical barriers often make it more attractive for a cellular provider to install additional channels and base stations at the same physical location rather than find new site locations.
  • It is possible to provide small and large cells which are co-located at a single location by using different antenna heights and power levels. This approach is used to provide large area coverage to high speed users while providing small area coverage to users travelling at low speeds.
