The notable features available via GSM include the following:
- SMS chat, picture messaging, ring tones, logos and icons, datagram-switched via control channels;
- Circuit-switched data at 9.6 to 14.4 Kbps to high-speed circuit-switched data (HSCSD) at n x 14.4 Kbps (eg., 2 time slots = 28 Kbps; 3 time slots = 43 Kbps);
- WAP, circuit-switched and packet switched via GPRS;
- Packet data: GPRS with bit rates of 20 to 40 Kbps; enhanced GPRS with bit rates of 50 to 120 Kbps depending on the number of assigned timeslots;
- Location-based services (Cell ID, EOTD, TDOA and GPS);
- Accessories (handspring visor GSM module, telematics, and more);
- SIM card (security, m-commerce, SIM toolkit, class 2 SMS handset configuration control, prepaid card and future micropayment);

Services of GSM:
- The telecomunication services provided by the GSM PLMN are divided into two main groups, called basic services:
- Bearer services: Telecommunications services that give the user the capacity needed to transmit appropriate signals between certain access points (user-network interfaces).
- Teleservices: Telecommunications services that provide the user with necessary capacities, including terminal equipment functions, to communicate with any other users.
- In addition to speech, GSM offers a wide range of data bearer services upto 9.6 kb/s suitable for connection to circuit-switched or packet-switched data networks.
- GSM also supports Group 3 facsimile as a data service by use of an appropriate converter. A comprehensive range of supplementary services are offered by GSM, including call forwarding, call barring, multiparty service, advice of charge and others.
