The term topology of the network is the geometric representation of the relationship of all the links and the linking devices called nodes to one another. Various topologies are possible for the broadcast LANs such as:

(i) MESH topology :

Every device is connected to every other device with the help of links.

Advantages:

  • Direction communication is achieved.
  • Speed is more.
  • Alternate paths are available for data transfer i.e Maximum advantage.
  • Higher reliability.
  • Links for mesh= n(n-1)/2.

Disadvantages:

  • Mesh has many cables.

(ii) STAR topology:

This type of topology has a central hub and the stations are connected with channels of hub.

Advantages:

  • Less cables.
  • Complexity is less.
  • Has a point-to-point connection.

Disadvantages:

  • No direct communication.

(iii) BUS topology:

Stations are connected to the cables with the help of tap.

Advantages:

  • This has multipoints.
  • Single links i.e. single cables.

Disadvantages:

  • No. of taps has signal link out from the place.

(iv) RING topology:

Repeaters are used to correct the shape of the pulse. Wherein noise remains unaffected.

Advantages:

  • All the networks uses ring topology.

Disadvantages:

  • If one is affected then entire network collapses.
