A clean environment is essential for human health and well-being. Man and environment have always been related. Humans are dependent on the environment for food procurement, medicine, rains and drainage. In return Humans have affected the way the environment has changed in the years. But the human- environment interaction also has had a negative aspect to it. Excessive usage of natural resources, burning of fossil fuels and degradation of the environment has resulted in pollution which has affected human health. Climate change, depletion of stratospheric ozone, loss of biodiversity, land degradation and noise can also affect human health.
The major environment related health concerns are related to outdoor and indoor air pollution, poor water quality, poor sanitation and hazardous chemicals. The related health impacts include respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, cancer, asthma and allergies, as well as reproductive and neurological disorders.
SPM (Suspended particulate matter) and ground level ozone are the main threats to human health from air pollution. Other toxic chemicals suspended in the polluted air may also cause severe health problems.
Excessive noise levels disturb human health, this kind of pollution can lead to annoyance, sleep disturbance and adverse health effects.
Human health has always been threatened by natural hazards such as storms, floods, fires, landslides and droughts. Their consequences are being worsened by a lack of preparedness and by human actions such as deforestation, climate change and biodiversity loss. Environmental fury in form of natural disasters leads to climate change and affect human health. Floods, Tsunamis and droughts lead to the change in the human lifestyle.
Chemicals released into the environment may have adverse effects on humans. Some chemicals with longer lives may enter the food chain and get bio-magnified, affecting human health.
A healthy environment promotes peace and prosperity. Hence we observe that villages which are nearer to nature have inhabitants living a more healthy life than those living in the urban areas.
