Gender equity, also known as gender equality, refers to the view that men and women should receive equal treatment and they should not be discriminated on the basis of their gender. India has a predominantly male dominated society. Important decisions related to family and society is taken by men. Even environmental decisions are taken primarily by men.
The following are the reasons for the need of gender equity:
1. Women work long hours collecting food, firewood and fodder in the rural areas hence associated with the environment more than men. Even though their association with the environment is more than men, they are hardly part of the decision making when it comes to the environment.
Women have not been given importance when it comes to education and skill development.
Health care facilities for young girls is considerably negligible as compared to boys.
Women are more vehement when it comes to protection of the environment as majority of environmental movements have been spearheaded by women.
