What is the role of the Ministry of Environment and Forests?

The Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) is responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating and overseeing the implementation of environmental programmes & policies in the country. The main activities undertaken by the ministry are as follows:

  1. Conservation and survey of the flora & fauna, forests, lakes & rivers and other wilderness areas of the country.
  2. Prevention and control of pollution, afforestation and land degradation mitigation.
  3. Administration of the national parks of India And Ensuring the welfare of animals.
  4. It serves as the nodal agency for various international programs like United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) etc.
  5. For all development projects, whether Government or Private, The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) requires a mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) done by a competent organization.
