i) A major part of natural resources are today consumed in the developed world. The consumption of resources per capita is 50 times greater in developed countries than in developing countries.
ii) Today, emphasis is given on using renewable resources of energy due to the following factors:-
1) Fresh water resources are so extensively used and wasted that they run dry. Also they are heavily polluted by sewage and toxic substances, making them unfit for consumption.
2) Forests, once destroyed, take thousands of years to regrow into fully developed natural ecosystems. Hence the burning of wood to supply fuel needs to be stopped.
3) Fossil fuels like oil and coal, if extracted at the present rate, will soon be totally used up. They will take millions of years to reform again.
4) Renewable energy is the energy that is derived from a limitless source, in contrast to fossil fuels derived from a finite source. Types of renewable include solar energy (power from the Sun), wind energy, tidal energy (power from the seas) and geothermal energy (power in the form of heat from within the Earth). Energy can be called renewable if it can neither run out nor be easily replaced.
5) Renewable energy resources are great for our energy portfolio because they are inexhaustible and won’t pollute the planet for us or those of future generations by emitting toxic chemicals and gases.
6) Renewable energy resources can deployed anywhere without the need of extensive power lines distributing the energy since they are capable of delivering power directly to the end consumer.
7) Since every town has access to sunlight, wind and geothermal power from earth, harnessing these renewable resources is easy.
8) Limitless sources like solar power and wind will never suffer from spills, leaks, resource exhaustion or contaminate land.
