The Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) is responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating and overseeing the implementation of environmental programmes & policies in the country. The main activities undertaken by the ministry are as follows:
- Conservation and survey of the flora & fauna, forests, lakes & rivers and other wilderness areas of the country.
- Prevention and control of pollution, afforestation and land degradation mitigation.
- Administration of the national parks of India And Ensuring the welfare of animals.
- It serves as the nodal agency for various international programs like United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) etc.
- For all development projects, whether Government or Private, The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) requires a mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) done by a competent organization.
