Indoor Air Pollution:

  • Indoor air pollution refers to chemical, biological and physical contamination of indoor air. It may result in adverse health effects.
  • Pollutants are any harmful contaminants in the air; therefore, indoor air pollution is when pollutants from things such as gases and particles contaminate the air indoors. Indoor air pollution is a very real and dangerous thing because indoor air is far more concentrated with pollutants than outdoor air.
  • Most of this air pollution we cause results from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline to produce electricity and power our vehicles. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a good indicator of how much fossil fuel is burned and how much of other pollutants are emitted as a result.

Indoor air pollutants and explain their effects on human health:

  • Asbestos: Health effects are Lung cancer, asbestosis, mesothelioma.
  • Biological agents such as house dust mites, animal dander, mold, bacteria and viruses: Health effects are allergic reactions such as asthma symptoms, eye, nose and throat irritation, influenza and other infectious diseases.
  • Carbon monoxide (CO): Headache, nausea, difficulty concentrating, death at high concentrations.
  • Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS): Respiratory irritation, bronchitis and pneumonia in children, lung cancer and heart disease.
  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx): Effects on health are eye, nose and throat irritation, lung irritation and damage.
  • Ozone (O3): Effects on health are respiratory tract irritation and inflamation, serious breathing, difficulty including asthma, permanent lung damage.
  • Organic chemicals: Effects eye, nose and throat irritations, headaches, loss of coordination, damage to liver, kidney and brain and various type of cancer.
