Ecological pyramid:

  • Ecological pyramid is a graphical representation for showing thr biomass or biomass productivity at each tropic level in a given ecosystem.
  • It beings with produces on the bottom such as plants and proceed through the various trophic levels such as herbivores, then carnivores which eat herbivores and so on).
  • The highest level in an ecological pyramid is the top of the food chain. There are 3 types: pyramid of biomass, productivity and number.

Pyramid of biomass:

  • Biomass is the amount of living or organic matter present in an organism.
  • Biomass pyramids show hoe much biomass is present in the organisms in unit area at different tropic levels.
  • Typical units for a biomass pyramid could be gramms per meter2

Pyramid of Productivity:

  • It shows the production of biomass at each tropic level and flow of energy through the food chain.
  • Typical units would be gramms per meter2 per year or calories per meter2 per year.
  • As with the others, this graph begins with producers at the bottom and places higher tropic levels on top.
  • When energy is transferred to the next tropic level, typically only 10% of it is used to build new biomass, to become stored energy.

Pyramid of numbers:

  • An ecological pyramid of numbers shows graphically the population of each level in a food chain.
