The most commonly used semisolid lubricants are greases, Vaseline, waxes & other compounds of oil and fat. The semi solid lubricants are used under working conditions, such as:

  1. Where the machine parts are subjected to low speed, heavy load, high pressure, high temperature & sudden jerks.
  2. Where the oil splashes/spills & spurt and spoil the whole machine and can be harmful to the product. Example: Machines used in textile mills, papers & food product manufacturing etc.
  3. Where the bearing has to be sealed against entry of dirt, water, dust & grit. Dust and moisture spoil the lubricating action.
  4. Where liquid lubricant cannot be maintained in position due to intermittent operations of machine parts such as shaft.
