  • Fillers:
  1. They reduce the cost of the plastic.
  2. They reduce shrinkage on settling and brittleness.
  3. They impart better tensile strength hardness of the plastic, opacity, finish and workability.
  4. eg. Barium salts make plastic impervious to X-rays.Asbestos provides corrosion and heat resistances.Addition of carbon black increases tensile strength.
  • Plasticizers:
  1. Its function os to improve plasticity and functionability, so as to reduce the temperature and pressure requuired for moulding.
  2. They help in determining the properties of finished prodect and hence are chosen accordingly.
  3. They impart greater freedom of movement between the polymeric macromolecukes of the resin.
  4. eg. cellulose derivatives discolours when moulded unless moulding temperature is reduced by addition of suitable plasticizer.
  • Lubricants:
  1. These additives promote glossy finish to plastic materials, in addition to improving the flow charateristics and friction reduction in the processing machines.
  2. waves, oils, stearates, oelates and soaps are employed to make the moulding defects of the plastic easier and help in providing a glossy finish to the products.
