To enable future smart networks, better spectrum utilization through the use of sophisticated communication and computing technologies is needed. In this direction, Cognitive Radio technology has been proposed in recent years as a revolutionary solution. In this chapter the fundamental concept about Cognitive radio characteristics, functions, network architecture and applications are presented, and then various spectrum sensing techniques, their comparison is discussed. Finally classification of spectrum allocation and sharing scheme is summarized.
