Condition of equilibrium

a) Stable equilibrium

b) Unstable equilibrium

c) Neutral equilibrium

a) Stable equilibrium:

-If a small angular displacement of body sets up a couple which oppose the angular displacement of body and bring back the body to its original position.

b)Unstable equilibrium:

-If a small angular displacement of body sets up a couple which tends to further increase in angular displacement of body, results in unstable equilibrium.

c) Neutral equilibrium:

-If a small angular displacement of the body does not set up couple and body adopts new position given by angular displacement.

e.g consider a air balloon heavier at bottom.

-For equilibrium

$W=F_B$.........fig (a)

-If a balloon is displaced in clockwise direction (fig (b)), then W and $F_B$ sets up a couple in anti-clockwise direction to bring the balloon in original position.

Equilibrium For submerged bodies For floating bodies
a) Stable When $W=F_B$ and point B is above G When $W=F_B$ and point M is above G
b) Unstable When $W=F_B$ and point B is below G When $W=F_B$ and point M is below G
c) Neutral When $W=F_B$ and point B & G at same point When $W=F_B$ and point M & G at same point
