Construction :

• Fig shows LBM consist of flash lamps/ flash tube, power supply, reflecting mirror, capacitor, lens etc.

• Flash tube : it is used to provide necessary energy to the atoms to excite their electrons.

• Power supply : A high voltage power source is used to produce light in flash light tube.

• Capacitor: it is used to operate the machine at pulse mode

• Reflecting mirror : two types of mirrors are used first one is 100 % reflecting and other is partially reflecting. The laser beam comes out from partially reflecting mirror.

Working :

• A very high energy laser beam is produced by the laser machine

• This laser beams are focused on work piece to be machined

• When the laser beam strikes the surface of the work piece, the thermal energy of the laser beam is transferred to the surface of the work piece.

• This heats, melts, vaporizes and finally removes the material from the work piece.

Advantages :

• Very small holes can be machined easily.

• No tool wear, as no direct contact between tool and work piece.

• Brittle, non – metallic and hard material can be easily machined.

Applications :

• Used for drilling small holes.

• Used for trimming of the sheet metal.
