For maintaining the uniformity throughout in marking system of grinding wheels, the Bureau if Indian Standard (BIS) has derived the standard system to be followed by manufacturers.
As per BIS, the various elements and characteristics of grinding wheels are indicated on grinding wheels in defined sequence.
Abrasive
Grit or grain size
Grade
Structure
Bond
Also suitable prefix and suffix can be used in representation of sequence, but it is not compulsory.
Following table shows the marking system by BIS in their IS code.
Apart from the above diameter, width, thickness and bore dia, are also required to be mentioned while specifying the grinding wheel.
e.g. (Read with the help of above table)
300 x 30 x 42 W A 46 L 4 v 17
Here, 300 mm = wheel dia, 30 mm wheel thickness, 42mm - Bore dia
W = manufacturers prefix for abrasive
A = Abrasive type - Aluminium oxide, 46 = Grain size - Medium
L = Grade type - Medium, 4 = Structure type - dense
V = Nature of band - vitrified bond
17 = Manufacturer suffix for bond type
