The use of several antenna beams provide coverage of different service zones.The carriers appear as outputs of one or more receiving antennas.

Multibeam satellites include two basic configurations

  1. Each receiving transmitting beam combination constitute independent network.
  2. Two stations from different coverage regions belonging to unique network establish pair of stations in different service zones.

In first configuration payload contains many independent repeaters as there are receiving,transmitting beam combinations.

The second configuration corresponds typically to the concept of multi-beam satellite.

Multiple beam antennas produce hundreds of beams because of which the link budget is improved to small user terminals to the high satellite antenna gain obtained with very narrow beams.

On the other hand the capacity is increased by reusing the frequency band allocated to system many times.
