Advantages:-
1. Lighter in weight than riveted joints since in welding gussets, cover plates, straps or other connecting component is not required.
2. Welded joint has a greater strength usually a welded joint has the strength of a parent metal itself.
3. Alterations and additions can be easily made in the existing structures.
4. Welded joints (assemblies) are tight and leak proof as compared with riveted assemblies.
5. Welded joints provides maximum efficiency (up-to 100%) which is not possible in case of riveted joints.
6. The production time is less for welded assemblies.
7. As the welded structure is smooth in appearances therefore it looks pleasing. The Projection of riveted head adversely affects the appearance of the riveted structure.
8. Machine components of certain shape, such as circular steel pipes, Find difficulty in riveting. However they can be easily welded.
9. When two parts are joined by riveting holes are drilled in the parts to accommodate rivets. The holes reduce the cross-sectional area of the members and results in stress concentration. There is no such problems in welded joints.
10. It is possible to weld any part of structure at any point. But riveting requires enough clearance.
Disadvantages:-
1. Welding resulting in a thermal distortion of the parts, thereby inducing residual stresses. This happens due to uneven heating and cooling during fabrication.
2. It requires a highly skilled labor and supervision.
3. The inspection of welding work is more difficult than riveting work. Also it is costly compared with riveted or cost structures.
4. Since no provision is kept for expansion and contraction in the frame, therefore there is a possibility of cracks developing in it.
