  • Decentralization refers to the multiple authority or domains participating in an application. Various parts of an application are owned and controlled by various parties which communicate over a network to achieve the goals of the application.
  • Decentralized architectures are created whenever the parties want to retain autonomous control over aspects of their participation. The websites around the world are owned and controlled by many individuals and organizations. By agreeing to basic standards of the Web like HTTP, any user may traverse the Web to obtain information; in the process it may cross many agency boundaries. Website owners typically want to retain the ability to take their sites offline at arbitrary times to add new contents or to add new servers.
  • Since there is no single authority, there is no guarantee that a participant in a system will always be participating with the best of intentions. Decentralized systems are also distributed, so it is a challenge to deal with latency and other issues of distribution.
