Data:

Diameter (d) = 1.2 m = 1200 mm

Pressure (p) = 1.8 Mpa = 1.8 $N/mm^2$

Stress = ?

Thickness (t) = 5 mm.

For spherical shell,

Stress acting is the hoop/circumferential stress only.

$\therefore \ \sigma_H = \frac{Pd}{4t} = \frac{1.8 \times 1200}{4 \times 5} $

$\sigma_H = 108 \ N/mm^2$

$\sigma_H = 108 \ Mpa$ $(\because \ 1 \ Mpa = 1 \ N/mm^2)$
