Oxidation ponds, also called lagoons or stabilization ponds are large, shallow ponds designed to treat wastewater through the interaction of sunlight, bacteria and algae.
Algae within the pond and utilized sunlight to produced oxygen during photosynthesis. This oxygen is used by aerobic bacteria in the oxidation pond to breakdown the organic waste in the wastewater.
The broken down solids settle down in the ponds resulting in effluent that is relatively well treated.
