Mean Anomaly (M)

  • It may be considered as True Anomaly if the satellite would have proceeded along a circular orbit of the same period T as that of the elliptical orbit.

The five parameters $a, e, i, Ω, ω$ completely define the satellite orbit in space and the sixth parameter M will define motion of satellite in orbit.

  • a and e give shape of ellipse.
  • i and $Ω$ relates orbital plane position with respect to earth’s equatorial plane.
  • $ω$ gives the rotation of the orbit’s perigee point relative to orbits line of nodes in the earth’s equatorial plane.
  • M gives position of the satellite in its orbit at a reference time known as epoch.

True Anomaly (v):

  • The True Anomaly is the angle from the Perigee to the satellite position measured at the Earth’s center. This gives the true angular position of the satellite in the orbit as a function of time. Thus, v gives the position of satellite in orbit.

Satellite velocity:

  • The ratio of distance travelled by the satellite to the time taken to travel that distance is called as satellite velocity. The velocity of a geostationary is equal to $\frac{3.07km}{s^2}$ .

$v=\frac{2πr}{T}=\frac{2π∙42164km}{23 hr 56 min 4 sec}=3.07km/sec^2$

Satellite period (T):

  • Satellite period is the time taken by the satellite to complete one revolution around the earth.

T=23 hours 56mins and 4 seconds
