The various type of material used in service pipe are as fallowed
Asbestos
Cast iron
Steel
R.C.C
Pre-stressed
Wrought iron
Copper
Lead
Plastic pipe
Wooden pipe
1. Asbestos pipe
Asbestos pipe are made from a mixture of asbestos fibre and cement
Use- It is used to convey water under very low pressure.
Advantages
A. The inside surface of pipe is very smooth
B. This pipe are anti-corrosive
C. The joining of pipe is very smooth and flexible.
D. Cheap in cost.
E. As the pipe are light in weight they are easy to handle and transport.
Disadvantages
A. The pipe is brittle
B. The pipe are cannot durable
C. Pipe is only used for low pressure.
2. Cast iron pipe
Cast iron pipe are extensively used for the conveyance of water.
They are available in sizes up to diameter about 1200mm or more.
Advantages
A. The cost is moderate
B. Pipe is strong and durable
C. The pipe is easy to join.
D. The pipe is not subjected to corrosion.
Disadvantages
A. The breakage of this pipe is large
B. When the size increases beyond 1200mm dia. The pipe becomes heavier as well as uneconomical.
3. R.C.C Pipe
The reinforcement in R.C.C pipe consist of ring or hoops and longitudinal steel bar
This pipe may vary from 500mm to 250mm or more.
Advantages
A. The maintenance cost is low
B. The inside surface of pipe can be made smooth
C. These pipe will not collapse or fail under normal traffic load when placed below road.
D. The pipe can be cast at site of work and there is reduction in transportation charges.
4. Steel pipe
The milt steel is used for the manufacturing of steel pipe.
The steel pipe are generally used for pipes having diameter greater than 1200mm
The inside and outside surface of steel pipes are generally galvanised.
Advantages
A. The pipe is cheap in first coat
B. The pipe is available in large length thus the number of joint become less.
C. The pipe is light in weight and therefore it become easy to transport them.
D. Pipe is durable and strong enough to resist high internal water pressure.
Disadvantages
A. The maintenance cost is high.
B. The pipe is likely to be rusted by slightly acidic or alkaline water.
5. Wrought iron
These pipes are light in weight and they can easily cut threaded and worked.
But they are found to less costly and durable as compare to cast iron pipe
Advantages
A. Lighter the cast iron pipe
B. Easily cut threaded worked.
Disadvantages
A. More costly than cast iron pipe.
B. Less durable than cast iron pipe.
6. Copper pipe
The copper pipes do not sag or bend due to hot water thus there used in restricted to convey hot water
They are costly thus cannot be used for distribution of water.
Advantages
A. Not liable to corrode
B. They can be easily bend
C. Do not sag if hot water is used
Disadvantages
A. Costly.
B. Good conductor of electricity.
7. Lead pipe
These pipes are usually not adopted for the conveyance of water.
If proper care is not taken the lead pipe may cause lead poisoning.
Advantages
A. Easily bend.
B. Stand high pressure.
Disadvantages
A. Cause poisoning.
B. Sag when hot water is used.
8. Plastic pipe
The use of plastic pipe conveyance of water has increases.
Advantages
A. The pipe is good electrical insulators.
B. The pipe is free from corrosion.
C. The pipe is light in weight and it is easy to bend join and install them.
Disadvantages
A. The coefficient of plastic expansion is high.
B. Plastic is less resistance to lead.
C. Some type of plastic import taste to the water.
