Artificial intelligence (AI), is a new and rapidly developing field of computer science. It deals with computers performing human like functions such as reasoning and interpretation.
AI may also take the form of simulating the human senses of vision, hearing, touch, and even smell. These senses usually serve as a source of information for the human brain to use in making observations, drawing conclusions, problem solving, natural language processing, and formulating decisions.
Computer systems are being developed which operate with the same basic approach to problem solving, rather than the fixed, sequential, programmed logic of conventional computers.
"An intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that are difficult enough to require significant human expertise for their solution.
Knowledge necessary to perform at such a level, plus the inference procedures used, can be thought of as a model of the expertise of the best practitioners of the field".
