Earth Station Design Considerations

There are at least 8 important considerations that most of the earth stations have to meet.

1. High gain in the direction of wanted signals.
2. Low gain in the direction of unwanted signals.
3. Low effective noise temperature for the entire receiving systems.
4. High antenna efficiency.
5. Continuous satellite pointing with a specified accuracy.
6. Minimum performance variations caused by local wind and weather.
7. Minimal variations in the illumination of the satellite by the earth station.
8. High discrimination between orthogonally polarised signals. Most of the above design requirements are governed by the earth station’s $\frac{G}{T}$ ratio.
