The horizontal angle between magnetic meridian and true meridian is known as magnetic declination.

When north end of magnetic needle is pointed toward the West side of the true meridian the position is termed declination west (θ W).

When north end of magnetic needle is pointed toward the East side of the true meridian the position is termed declination east (θ W).
