The types of pollutants will vary as the type of Industry , raw material , process of manufacturing will vary. The following are the types of Pollutants :-

A) Inorganic Salts :-

  • The organic salts are present in almost all types of Industrial waste.
  • They make surface water "Undesirable" for domestic industrial or agricultural uses.
  • These Pollutants make the water hard. The main inorganic salts associated with the industrial waste water are :- Chlorides(Cl) , Carbonates , Phosphorous , Nitrogen etc.

B) Acids and Alkalies :-

These alkalies and acids , the water becomes useless of the re-aeration purpose i.e boating or swimming purpose. It is also dangerous to be aquaculture.

C) Organic Matter :-

The decomposition of the organic matter creates unpleasant tastes and odour.

D) Suspended Solids :-

When the suspended solids settles down on the floor they star decomposing giving bad odor. They also make the deflection of oxygen to the surface water.

E) Floating Solids :-

  • The lighter material like oil greases float on the surface of the water and Create problem.
  • It is also create the problem to the process of re-creation (As thin film of oil is developed on the surface of Water)
  • Near the sea-ports in the dockyards either due to clearing of the sip or due to breaking of the ships.
  • The oil gets spread over the surface of oceanic water , or bay water. which are used for inland navigation. It may lead to fire hazards. eg during the Gulf-war the oil tankers broke and quite an extensive ocean areas was covered by a thin layer of oil , which created alot of environmental problems , to the Gulf-countries.

F) Toxic Chemicals :-

Sulphides , acetylene , phenols , alchols cyanides and the heavy metals like copper , chromiun , cadmium , zinc , arsenic etc are the toxic material. they effect the natural vegetation and animals consuming the water having toxic chemicals.

G) Colours :-

  • Due to the soluble material the colour of waste water changes. The penetration of sum rays is restricted due to dark colour of the waste water.
  • The effluent of paper mills textile mills , leather industries have a reddish to brownish colour.
  • The colour of the water itself , does not look pleasant and generally such coloured water has bad odour also.
