The difference is as follows:

1 Case hardening is a process of making hard case over metal by infusion of element over surface forming hard layer Surface Hardening is a process of increasing hardness of surface keeping the core soft.
2 Done by heating to red hot condition, then infusing carbon on surface and then quenching in water bath. Done by heating the surface at austinizing temperature and core below it and immediate cooling it by quenching.
3 Used for low carbon steel like mild steel. Used for many equipment made of steel.
4 Does not required immediate quenching. Requires immediate quenching.
