1. Topographical situation of the dam site:

The topography of the dam site is the first criterion to be taken into consideration in the selection of the dam type.

The foundation condition of the dam site is not suitable for each dam type.

3. Location and type of suitable material to be used in dam construction:

There are three types of natural materials required for dam construction. These are aggregate for rock, concrete for soil, filler and riprap for filling.
