1. Advantages of WAP

ii. Most modern mobile telephone devices support WAP.

iii. Real-Time send/receive data.

iv. Multiplatform functionality (little change is needed to run on any website since XMI is used).

v. No hardware obsolescence.

2. Advantages of WAP 2.0

WAP 2.0 uses ‘Cascading Style Sheet (CSS)’ plus some WAP specific extensions. CSS is subset of CSS2 which is language of WWW.

i. With WAP 2.0, Web developers can use familiar authoring tools and PC web browsers for building mobile Internet sites.

ii. Greater control on appearance of color, background, borders, fonts, etc.

iii. If there is only single CSS to whole site, mobile will download it only once when the site is first visited. It is then stored in cache.

iv. The layout and formatting information can be moved to separate CSS which makes file size smaller and short download time.

v. Since the content and presentation can be separated: - Layout and style of same content can be matched to characteristics of different wireless devices easily and to different user agents easily. - The content file need not be modified when new mobile phones come to market. Only layout is modified. - A single WAP CSS can be applied to multiple WAP pages. - The style code can be used in multiple projects. - Work on content and presentation can be divided.

3. Disadvantages of WAP

i. Low speeds, security and very small user interface.

ii. Not very familiar to users.

iii. Business model is expensive.

iv. Forms are hard to design.

v. Third party is included.

4. Disadvantages of WAP 2.0

i. Different WAP browsers have different levels of support for WAP CSS.

ii. An external WAP CSS can increase the time required for a page to be completely loaded the first time WAP site is visited because of following reasons:

  • External WAP CSS style sheet does not exist in cache of mobile at first visit.
  • An XHTML MP document and its external WAP CSS have to be downloaded in separate requests.
  • If a single WAP CSS is used, the file size will be large.
  • The WAP browser needs to parse the CSS in addition to XHTML MP document.

5. Applications of WAP

i. The first and foremost application is accessing the Internet from mobile devices.

ii. Games can be played from mobile devices over wireless devices.

iii. Mobile hand-sets can be used to access time sheets and fill expenses claims.

iv. Online banking via mobile phones will be very popular if implemented in secure way.

v. Services like locating WAP customers geographically, providing weather and traffic alerts are possible using WAP.
