Group technology is an approach to organizing manufacturing which can be applied in any industry where a small batch variety production is used. The basic concept of group technology (GT) is relatively simple. It is the identification and bringing together related or similar parts and processed, to make advantage of the similarities which exist, during all stages of design and manufacture.
GT is based on the fact that small lots of different parts can be produced more economically, if they are grouped and scheduled for production according to the common characteristics.
Definition of Group Technology:
It is an approach to the organization of work in which organizational units are relatively independent groups, each responsible for the production of a given family of products.
A group is a combination of a set of workers and a set of machines and or other facilities laid out in one reserved area, which is designed to complete a specified set of products.
A family is the set of products produced by a group.
