Main Features of WCDMA:
1) It supports high data rate transmission: 384 Kbps with wide area coverage, 2 Mbps with local coverage.
2) It has high service flexibility: which supports multiple parallel variable rate services on each connection.
3) It has both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes of operation.
4) It is built in support for future capacity and coverage enhancing technologies like adaptive antennas, advanced receiver structures, and transmitter diversity.
5) WCDMA supports inter frequency hand over and hand over to other systems, including hand over to GSM.
Comparison of cdma2000 and WCDMA based on main features:
Cdma2000 | WCDMA | ||
---|---|---|---|
Core network | ANSI-41 MAP | GSM MAP | |
Channel bandwidth | 1.25 MHz (1X), 3.75 MHz (3X) | 5.0 MHz | |
Chip rate | 1.2288 Mcps (1X), 3.68Mcps 3x | 4.096 Mcps (DOCOMO),3.84 Mcps (UMTS) | |
Synchronized base station | Yes | No; but synchronized BS is Optional | |
Multi-carrier spreading option | Yes, but in cdma2000 1X (direct spread) | No (direct spread) | |
Modes of operation | FDD | FDD and TDD | |
Voice coder | EVRC | AMR | |
Packet-switched core network | IETF based, PDSN/ AAA/HA/FA | GPRS based, SGSN/ GGSN | |
Overhead | Low (because of shared pilot,code Channel) | High (because of non-shared,pilot code Channel) |
