TEMERATURE STRESSES IN RIGID PAVEMENT :

WARPING DURING THE DAY AND WARPING STRESSES

The temperature differential between the top and bottom of the CC pavement results in differential expansion the slab causing it to warp or bend . As warping is resisted by the self weight of the concrete pavement slab.

WARPING DURING THE NIGHT :

At night the top of the slab is cooler than the bottom and this lead to expansion of bottom with respect to the top and development of tensile stresses at the bottom of the pavement at the interiors and edge regions of the slab the corner tend to curl upwards .

EXPANSION DURING HOT SEASON

During summer season, there is an overall increase in the average temperature of CC pavement and this causes expansion of the slab

CONTRACTION DURING COLD SEASON

During cold weather or winter season, there is an overall decrease in average temperature of CC pavement and this causes contraction of the slab during contraction of the CC pavement, the frictional resistance between the interface between the surface of the supporting layer and bottom of the pavement slab resist the movement .
