Selection of Grinding Wheels:-
- Selection of proper grinding wheel is necessary to obtain the best results in the grinding work.
- In selectingagrinding wheel following four factors are considered.
1.Material to be ground: for this
a. Abrasive:-Al- oxide is recommended for high tensile strength material and
Si-C for low tensile strength.
b. Grain size:-Fine grain is used for hard material and coarse grain is used for soft material.
c. Grade:-Hard wheel is used for soft material and vice versa.
d. Structure:-Close spacing is required for hard and brittle materials and wide for soft and ductile.
e. Bond:-Majority of wheels are manufactured with vitrified bonds for good results.
Area of contact:
Fine and close grain spacing is useful where the area of contact is small whereas coarse grain and spacing is employed in case of large area.
Type of grinding machine:
Heavy rigidly constructed machines take softer wheels than lighter and flexible types.
Wheel speed:
The higher the wheel speed softer wheel should be used.
Work speed:
The higher the work speed in relation to the wheel speed, the harder wheel should be used.
Condition of the grinding m/c:
Loose bearings and insecure foundations is necessary for the use of harder wheels.
Personal factor:
The skill of workman is necessary for selecting the proper wheel.
