• It is suggested to use the wood for boilers as a fuel for large power generation. There are certain plants which can be planted & harvested over regular period of time to have high yield per unit area.
• Thus the method of tapping maximum solar energy by growing plants on large scale is called energy plantation.
• Many energy plantation projects have been taken up over large areas to meet the requirement of fuel, fodder & fast growing trees for power generation in arid areas having intense sun shine.
• The choice of plants to be grown depends on the location, soil, availability of water & many other factors.

Some of the plants suitable for large scale plantation in India conditions having high yield are:-

• Casuarina trees are suitable for plantations in coastal area.
• Eucalyptus trees are very fast growing trees. It grows to about 15m in there years & 30m in 10 years with large diameter trunk ranging from 1m to 2m.
• Sorghums energy crop is suitable for alcohol production.
• Other suitable trees for energy plantation in India are babool, leucaena, Jajoba.
