A Mac- Pherson structure type independent suspension was developed by Earle S. Mac- Pherson in 1947. It developed a single wishbone with a telescopic strut type suspension system. In this system, there is a telescopic strut type shock absorber, a single arm, & a diagonal stay. (Fig :7.1)
A strut is fixed in the body structure at the upper end through a flexible mounting & a lower part of the strut is connected at the bottom by a joint to the lower part of strut also carries the stub axle, which in turns carries the wheel. The steering motion is supplied to the lower part of the strut & it turns the whole strut a spring coil & a hydraulic damper surround the upper part of the strut which take cake of the road roughness, shocks & vibration. It is used in Maruti- zen, maruti– 800.
Advantages :
1)It is a simple in construction.
2)Wheel camber does not very much.
3)It's maintenance is very easy.
4)It's Light moving parts help the wheel of follow the road irregularities.
Disadvantages:
1)Increases tyre weak
2)Quality of ride depends upon shock absorber.
3)Special equipment is required to check steering angle accurately.
4)can not withstand heavy load.
