Optical fiber is not hazardous because of their insulating nature. Optical fibers are immune to EMI and RFI. They are not disturbed by high voltage field.
Optical fibers have wider bandwidth.
Optical fibers have low loss per unit length.
Use of optical fibers in temperature sensors:
In this case the optical fiber is subjected to heat and the change in temperature causes refractive index variation in core and cladding area. As temperature increase the difference of refractive index between the core and cladding decreases and hence some light leaks into the cladding. This characteristic is used for the measurement of temperature using a temperature sensor that uses a LED source. Such sensors are useful for a range of temperature from 80-degree Celsius to 700 degrees Celsius.
