The phenomenon of bending of light round the corners of an obstacle and spreading of light waves into the region of geometrical shadow of the obstacle is called diffraction.

The diffraction is classified in two types Fresnel’s class of diffraction and Fraunhofer’s class of diffraction.

Fresnel Fraunhofer
Source of light is at a finite distance from,diffracting system and the diffraction effect is observed at definite,distance from the diffracting system. Source and screen is effectively at an infinite from the, diffracting system.
The wave front is spherical or cylindrical The incident wave front is plane wave front
No lens system is used Lens system is used in between source and,diffracting system and another between screen and diffracting system.
Quantitative treatment is complex. It is simple.
