In work break down structure a top to down approach to planning is adopted. The work break down structure helps in the identification of objectives and allows the planner to see the total picture of the project.

At the highest level of the project, the major items are identified and they are divided into their sub-component parts and the component parts are further divided into more detailed units.

This sub division units cannot be planned and controlled. The work packages at the lowest level are generally represented by a number of activities that are used to prepare network.

It helps to accurately and specifically define and organize the scope of the total project. This can be achieved by using a hierarchical tree structure.

It also helps with assigning responsibilities, resource allocation, monitoring the project and controlling the project.
