Worm and worm wheel is basically used for transmission of high gear ratios. The worm and worm wheel is a pair wheel the physical drives has high contact i.e the area during the drive is very high. High area of contact means there is high amount of friction created, high amount of friction means high amount of heat is generated. Depending upon the 'N' rpm at which the worm is rotating and the gear ratio the heat is generated. The generation of heat bends for checking the design for thermal failure. The aim in deciding different materials in the design is because the change in material will have different heat transfer coefficient i.e the ability to absorb the heat or to release the heat. The heat will only from one to the other or to the casing if we have different materials.
