  1. IS 1200 was developed by the Bureau of Indian standards, after the draft finalized by the methods of measurement of works of civil engineering.
  2. Measurement occupies a very important place in the planning and execution of any civil engineering work from the time of first estimates to the final completion and settlement of payments for a job.
  3. Methods followed for measurement are not uniform and considerable differences exist between practices followed by different construction agencies and also between various central and state government departments.

Rules for measurement:

The rules for measurement of each item are invariably described in IS-1200. However some of the general rules are listed below.

  1. Measurement shall be made for finished item of work and description of each item shall include materials, transport, labour, fabrication tools and plants and all type of overheads for finishing the work in required shape size and specification.
  2. In booking, the order shall be in sequence of length, breadth, height or thickness.
  3. All works shall be measured subject to the following tolerances Linear measurement shall be measured to the nearest 0.01m Areas shall be measured to the nearest 0.01sq.m Cubic contents shall be worked out to the nearest 0.01cu.m
  4. Same type of work under different conditions and nature shall be measured separately under separate items.
